THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SOUTH AFRICA OPENS ITS DOORS IN PIMVILLE SOWETO

The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Africa (BGCSA) recently opened its first, pilot club in the tiny community centre bordering Dlushana Street in Pimville, in the throbbing heart of Soweto just outside Johannesburg. The Pimville Boys & Girls Club of South Africa is now alive with youthful energy and activity as young people eagerly absorb and engage with the exciting Boys & Girls Club programmes on offer, providing Character & Leadership Development; Education & Career Development; Health & Life Skills; Arts & Crafts and Sports, Fitness & Recreation.

The culmination of just over a year of planning and preparation, Tupperware Southern Africa - in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg Department of Community Development and key stakeholders from business, local government and non-profit sectors – kicked off this South African-based youth organization. Allan Dando, the President of Tupperware Southern Africa is the driving force behind what has been described as “the new wave in corporate citizenship and development”

BGCSA PROGRAMME AREAS
BGCSA offers programmes in 5 Core Programme areas.  Programme Areas are physical spaces within the clubhouse where programmes are offered.

Learning Centre: Each member has the opportunity to spend time in the Learning Centre where they can be supervised and participate in Power Hour, tutoring, learning games and various education incentive programs.

Sport/Fitness/Recreation:
These Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.

IT: Club Tech is an ambitious, multi-year initiative that provides all Boys & Girls Clubs with state-of-the-art software; a comprehensive array of programs to help Club professionals build members’ computer skills and integrate technology in all Core Program Areas.

Arts Centre:  Programs in this core area enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing.

Character/Leadership:
Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs. They also develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making, and contributing to Club and community.
